Move

Here you can find some practical advice to help you avoid problems when planning and arranging to move your place of residence:

  • Sort your belongings according to how fragile they are and by type of item.
  • Wrap up fragile items properly to prevent any breakage.
  • Make a list of priorities and prepare a box containing all of the items you will need to unpack first.
  • Make a list of the items contained in each box and number the boxes in a visible location. You will find it very useful to save this information in a notebook or an Excel spreadsheet.
  • If you are going to box up your possessions yourself, start by collecting boxes, packing tape, newspaper and/or plastic bubble wrap for the fragile items.
  • Put heavy objects in smaller boxes and lightweight items in medium-sized boxes.
  • Label each box with the name of the room of the new home where its items will go. This will be very helpful when it is time to unpack after you arrive at your new location.
  • Cover furniture with some sort of fabric covering to prevent scratches or damage.

Appliances

Defrost refrigerators and freezers 24 hours before your move. Once these have been moved into your new home, you should wait another 24 hours before plugging them in. Do not forget to use tape to hold in place any parts that could move or open, such as the freezer door. Be careful with the plugs and roll up the cords to make them easier to transport.

Appliances

Do not forget to clearly label any boxes that contain fragile items. If you also label the proper position of the item ("This side up") and protect it with cardboard or wads of paper, you can avoid any unpleasant surprises when unpacking.

DISHES AND OTHER FRAGILE ITEMS

Do not forget to clearly label any boxes that contain fragile items. If you also label the proper position of the item ("This side up") and protect it with cardboard or wads of paper, you can avoid any unpleasant surprises when unpacking.

PLANTS

Make plants the last items you move, and water them for the last time at least 48 hours before they are moved. When you arrive with them at your new home, water them right away, in their new location if possible.

DOCUMENTATION AND NEW ADDRESS

Do not forget:

  • Cancel your service contracts with utility companies (electrical, telephone, cable TV, etc.).
  • Notify you bank of your new address, and if you are moving to a new city, arrange for opening new bank accounts there or transferring your existing ones.
  • Change your address for your credit card statements, other bills, subscriptions and all other materials you receive in the mail.
  • Ask your moving company if they can provide boxes to use for moving fragile items.
  • If you label the boxes with the name of the room that the items inside will go in at your new home, this will save time and effort when unpacking.
  • Also, pack items you will need right away together and label them as such.
